How to Choose a Safe Coloring App for Kids

Not every app marketed as “for kids” is actually built with a child’s independence in mind. Before installing a coloring app for your child, it’s worth running through a short checklist — most of the red flags below take less than five minutes to check.

Check the Ad Behavior Before Handing Over the Device

Open the app yourself first and use it for a few minutes. Look specifically for:

• Banner ads along the edges of the coloring canvas
• Video ads that play between pages or after a certain number of taps
• Ads disguised as content, like a colorful “bonus page” button that actually opens an ad

If you can’t find the ad behavior described clearly on the App Store listing, treat that as a yellow flag rather than assuming the app is ad-free.

Look for Links to the Outside World

A genuinely kid-safe coloring app shouldn’t need a web browser, a chat feature, or social sharing built into the core experience. If an app includes a “share to social media” button, decide in advance whether that’s something you want your child to have access to, and check whether it can be disabled in settings.

Check What Happens Behind a Paywall

Some free coloring apps offer only a handful of pages for free and lock the rest behind a subscription — which is fine, as long as it’s disclosed clearly. Look at the App Store listing for an explicit “In-App Purchases” or “Subscription” label, and if possible, test whether your child can accidentally trigger a purchase prompt during normal use.

Consider Age Appropriateness, Not Just Content

A coloring app can have completely appropriate artwork and still be a poor fit for a specific age — too much reading required for a pre-reader, or too simple to hold an older kid’s attention. Check the app’s suggested age range and, where possible, watch your child use it for a session before deciding it’s a long-term fit.
