How We Tested This

We installed Butter Buddies Coloring Book on a physical-equivalent iOS simulator and worked through it hands-on: browsing all three theme tabs, coloring the one free page start to finish, opening the paywall and settings screens, and watching for ads across the session. As with every app on this site — including ones developed by a company affiliated with our editorial team — our findings here come only from that testing and from Apple’s own App Store data, not from the developer’s marketing copy. Artwork & Content

The kawaii art style is genuinely nice — soft, rounded food and animal characters in the same visual language as this developer’s other apps, with a bit more variety since Butter Buddies spans multiple themed casts (a bear made of butter, toast-themed characters, and a third “Pancak…” category we could see but not unlock). The color palette itself is a nice touch: instead of plain color swatches, fills have names like “Rainbow,” “Jade Dip,” “Chili Glaze,” and “Plum Mist,” which makes color choice feel a little more like play.

The catch is how little of this you actually see for free. We counted at least 12 individual pages across the three theme tabs, and only one — a single page in the “Butter Buddies” tab — was unlocked without payment. The “Toasty Friends” tab (toast-and-bread characters: Happy Butter Toast, Toast Bear Breakfast, Strawberry Toast, Honey Toast and Bee) was entirely locked, as was the third tab we could see but not open.

User Experience

The tap-to-fill mechanic itself works well: tap a region, pick a fill, it colors in immediately, with a bucket tool as the default alongside brush and eraser options. It’s simple enough that a young child could use it without help.

What stood out less favorably was the timing of the app’s monetization prompts. After filling in just the single largest region of the one free page — not finishing the whole picture — the app immediately showed a “Ready to serve! 🎉” celebration followed by an “Unlock All Pages” paywall screen. The canvas doesn’t actually lock, so a kid can keep coloring past that point, but interrupting the activity that early felt more aggressive than the pacing we’ve seen in this developer’s other apps.

The paywall itself offers three tiers — $6.99/month, $24.99/year (marked “Best Value”), and $34.99 as a one-time lifetime purchase — for the full page library plus, per one settings screen, “no ads forever.” We didn’t attempt a purchase (the simulator’s App Store connection isn’t set up for real transactions), so we can’t speak to the post-purchase experience firsthand. Notably, we found no parental gate — no math problem, no press-and-hold confirmation — between the coloring screen and the pricing screen, meaning a child coloring solo could land on a page asking a parent to enter payment details with no extra step in between.

On the positive side, we never encountered an ad anywhere in the app during our session, which matches both the store listing and Apple’s “Data Not Collected” privacy label for this app. The Settings screen also includes Sound Effects and Haptics toggles, and completing a page genuinely does unlock a collectible “Butter Buddy” character card with a rarity tier (we unlocked a “Common” one) — a nice extra hook that goes beyond just coloring.

Our Take

Butter Buddies Coloring Book is well-built where it counts — the coloring itself is smooth, the art is charming, and the collectible layer adds real replay value. But this is the most restrictive free tier we’ve tested from this developer: a single free page, an early upsell interruption, and no parental gate before the purchase screen. If you’re going in expecting to subscribe or buy the lifetime unlock, it’s a solid pick. If you’re hoping for a mostly-free experience like several of this developer’s other apps, this one won’t deliver that.
