By 6, 7 and 8, most kids have outgrown the giant shapes of toddler apps. They want more detail, something to finish over several sessions, or something to collect, and they lose interest quickly in an app that feels too young. Every app on this list is one we’ve reviewed, and all six were ad-free and worked offline in our testing.

What Changes Between 6 and 8

Early elementary kids can usually stay with a page longer and make deliberate color choices rather than filling one big shape at a time. That changes what makes a good coloring app:

  • More zones per page. Pages split into smaller parts let a child plan colors, as in Tiny Rooms’ walls, rugs and furniture.
  • A reason to come back. Character unlocks and blind boxes reward returning on another day without timers or scores.
  • Themes they choose. At this age, a favorite animal, collecting or faith matters more than a cute style.
  • Independence. Kids this age can generally navigate a page gallery themselves; set the purchase settings so they can’t wander into a paywall.

If your child is ready for pages with real detail, our coloring apps by age guide explains what fits from age 8 up.

How We Chose

We started from our full BCA Score reviews and looked for what matters at this age:

  • Enough detail or depth to hold a 6 to 8 year old’s attention.
  • No ads in our testing.
  • Works offline, for trips and waiting rooms.
  • A large free or unlockable library, not a single sample page.

We left out a few apps that suit other ages better. Magic Unicorn and Baby Hippo are aimed at younger colorists (see our best coloring apps for 4 and 5 year olds), and Cute Halloween and Butter Buddies offer only one free page. Our reviews of Kawaii Animals, Dumpling Squishy and Islamic Kids note that full device testing is still to come, and each review says what we have and haven’t verified.

In-App Purchases: What to Know

All six are free to download and sell optional upgrades. On the App Store listings we read on October 27, 2026, each showed a one-time Lifetime Unlock, and all except Kawaii Animals also showed a monthly plan. Kids this age can tap through menus quickly, so set up protection first:

  1. Turn on Ask to Buy or block in-app purchases; our guide to stopping accidental in-app purchases takes ten minutes.
  2. Compare a monthly plan with a lifetime unlock before paying; our guide to how much coloring app subscriptions cost shows the math.
  3. If a purchase slips through, see how to get a refund.

Screen Time at 6 to 8

In January 2026 the AAP moved away from a single daily limit for school-age children toward a 5 C’s framework: the child, the content, whether it leaves them calm, what it crowds out, and how the family communicates about media. A calm, ad-free coloring app fits that framework more easily than autoplay video, but it still shouldn’t crowd out sleep, play or homework. See our guide to the AAP’s 2026 screen time guidance, and how to set time limits for coloring apps if you want a hard stop.

A Disclosure

All six apps on this list, like every app in our database, are published by EyeZen, a developer affiliated with our editorial team. We review them against the same criteria and publish what we find, including the weaknesses. See our disclosure policy.

Our Take

For most 6 to 8 year olds, start with Tiny Rooms: it’s our highest-rated app and gives kids a project rather than a page. Choose Capybara for more detailed animal pages, Kawaii Animals or Dumpling Squishy for kids who love collecting, Islamic Kids for faith-based content, and Beaver for a nature theme. For younger siblings, see the best coloring apps for 4 and 5 year olds; for the full list, our best coloring apps for kids.

Our Picks in Detail

1
Best Overall for Ages 6–8

Tiny Rooms Coloring for Kids

Tiny Rooms Coloring for Kids app icon
9.1/10BCA Score

Coloring as miniature interior design: kids color and decorate dollhouse rooms broken into walls, rugs, furniture and small props.

Why we picked it: Tiny Rooms has our highest BCA Score (9.1), and its room format rewards the patience and spatial thinking that grow at this age. We put its sweet spot at roughly ages 5–11, and undo plus a clear "done" state for each room make longer projects easy to manage.

2
Best for More Detailed Pages

Capybara Coloring for Kids

Capybara Coloring for Kids app icon
8.6/10BCA Score

Capybaras lounging, swimming and with friends, with a mix of simple and moderately detailed pages.

Why we picked it: Our review found the more detailed pages give older kids something to sink more time into, with consistent line weight across the page set. It's a focused pick for animal-loving 6 to 8 year olds.

3
Best for Collectors

Kawaii Animals Coloring Kids

Kawaii Animals Coloring Kids app icon
8.5/10BCA Score

A wide kawaii cast of cats, puppies, bunnies and bears in themed scenes, with nine characters to unlock.

Why we picked it: Completing pages and returning on different days unlocks one of nine characters, a low-pressure reason to come back with no timers or scores. Scenes like a café or a pajama party give more variety than a single-animal app.

4
Best Surprise Mechanic

Dumpling Squishy Coloring Book

Dumpling Squishy Coloring Book app icon
8.3/10BCA Score

Open a blind box to reveal which squishy food character, from dumplings to mochi, you'll color next.

Why we picked it: The blind-box reveal gives each session a small "what will I get" moment, which suits kids this age who love collecting. It's a lightweight surprise rather than a full game layered on top of coloring.

5
Best Faith-Based Pick

Islamic Kids Coloring Book

Islamic Kids Coloring Book app icon
8.6/10BCA Score

Mosques, Ramadan lanterns, Eid celebrations, Arabic letters and Islamic patterns across a large page set.

Why we picked it: The developer's listing describes 10 themed sections totaling 110 original pages, a larger library than several apps in our kids' lineup, which gives a 6 to 8 year old more to work through over time.

6
Beaver Coloring Book for Kids app icon
8.2/10BCA Score

Rivers, dams and forests with a friendly beaver character, for kids who prefer nature to farm or fantasy themes.

Why we picked it: Beaver Coloring Book opens straight to a page gallery with no onboarding friction, and the woodland setting gives it a different look from the rest of our kids' lineup.
