Four and five is the age most children’s coloring apps are made for, and also the age at which a lot of them go wrong: tiny regions that frustrate small fingers, menus that need reading, ads, and paywalls a child can tap straight into. Every app on this list is one we’ve reviewed, all six were ad-free and worked offline in our testing.

What 4 and 5 Year Olds Can Do

It helps to know what’s typical at this age. The CDC’s developmental milestone checklists say that by age 4, many children:

  • hold a crayon or pencil between fingers and thumb, rather than in a fist
  • name a few colors of items
  • draw a person with three or more body parts

And by age 5, many children:

  • write some letters in their name
  • name some numbers between 1 and 5 when you point to them
  • pay attention for 5 to 10 minutes during activities like arts and crafts

The CDC is explicit that screen time doesn’t count toward that last milestone, and children develop at their own pace, so treat these as a guide rather than a test. For coloring apps, they point to large regions, very little reading and short sessions. Our guides on at what age a child can color and whether coloring apps help fine motor skills go deeper, and crayons and paper still matter at this age; see coloring apps vs coloring books.

How We Chose

We started from our full BCA Score reviews and looked for what matters most at 4 and 5:

  • Large, forgiving regions a child can fill with a fingertip.
  • Little or no reading to get from opening the app to coloring.
  • No ads in our testing, so nothing interrupts or leads out of the app.
  • A one-time unlock option. Each listing offers a Lifetime Unlock ($19.99 to $39.99 on the App Store listings we read on October 23, 2026) alongside a monthly plan, so you aren’t forced into a recurring payment.
  • Works offline, for car trips and waiting rooms.

We left out two apps that are otherwise good for this age, Cute Halloween Coloring Book and Butter Buddies Coloring Book, because our reviews found only one page in each is free, with the rest behind a paywall. Each review on this site notes what we tested hands-on and what we haven’t verified yet.

Quick Picks by Child

Setting Up the iPad for a Preschooler

Ten minutes of setup makes any coloring app safer at this age:

  1. Block in-app purchases or turn on Ask to Buy; our guide to stopping accidental in-app purchases walks through it.
  2. Lock the iPad to the app with Guided Access and add a time limit; see how to set time limits for coloring apps.
  3. Give a warning before the end. A two-minute heads-up helps; our guide to ending screen time without a meltdown has more ideas.
  4. Turn on Airplane Mode for trips. All six apps worked offline in our testing.

How Much Screen Time at 4 and 5?

The WHO recommends no more than one hour a day of sedentary screen time for ages 2 to 4, with less being better, and the AAP keeps around one hour a day of high-quality content as an anchor for ages 2–5. A coloring session is part of that hour. Our guides to the WHO screen time guidelines and the AAP’s 2026 guidance explain both.

A Disclosure

All six apps on this list, like every app in our database, are published by EyeZen, a developer affiliated with our editorial team. We review them against the same criteria and publish what we find, including the weaknesses. See our disclosure policy.

Our Take

For most 4 and 5 year olds, start with Magic Unicorn for its simple navigation, or Highland Cow if your child is just getting started. Pick Happy Dino or Capybara to match a favorite animal, and move a confident 5-year-old to Tiny Rooms when they want something to build. For older children, see our best coloring apps for 6, 7 and 8 year olds or the full best coloring apps for kids; for younger ones, the best coloring apps for toddlers; and for a full age-by-age view, coloring apps by age.

Tiny Rooms Coloring for Kids

Tiny Rooms Coloring for Kids app icon
9.1/10BCA Score

Coloring as miniature interior design: kids color and decorate small dollhouse rooms they can come back to.

Why we picked it: Tiny Rooms has our highest BCA Score (9.1). It asks for a bit more patience and spatial thinking than a flat page, so we put its sweet spot at roughly ages 5–11, with younger kids benefiting from a parent's help on their first room.
